About NameWise

Every word carries a story. We dig up the roots.

NameWise is a labour of love for language. We explore the etymology — the origins and histories — behind the words we use every day and the names we give one another. From the Venetian roots of “quarantine” to the Nahuatl origins of “avocado,” we trace how meaning travels across centuries, cultures, and continents.

Our goal is simple: to make the deep history of language accessible, accurate, and genuinely delightful. Each entry is written to be clear enough for the curious newcomer and rich enough for the seasoned word-lover. We pair careful research with short documentary videos, timelines, and an interactive quiz so you can not only read about word origins — you can experience them.

Our Editorial Approach

Every entry on NameWise is researched, written, and reviewed by the NameWise Editorial Team. We draw on established works of historical linguistics and lexicography, and we cross-check each word’s roots, dates, and sense-changes before publishing. Where the scholarship is uncertain or disputed, we say so rather than inventing a tidy answer. On every article we link out to independent references — such as the Online Etymology Dictionary and Wiktionary — so you can verify the story for yourself and read further.

Language is always moving, so our entries are living documents: we revisit and update them as better evidence comes to light. If you spot an error or have a source we should consider, please tell us — corrections are genuinely welcome.

Who We Are

NameWise is created and maintained by H Square, an independent studio behind a small family of educational projects. The site is editorially independent, and our aim is simply to share the history of language as accurately and enjoyably as we can.

Our Videos

We produce short, carefully researched etymology documentaries — each one tracing a single word from its ancient roots to its modern meaning. You can find the full collection on our YouTube channel.

Our Other Projects
